Frederik III's ducats of this period were struck in the immediate aftermath of the 1660 constitutional revolution, when the Danish nobility was stripped of its tax privileges and absolute hereditary monarchy was formally established. The king needed hard currency — and visible symbols of his new authority — as the crown reorganized finances gutted by the disastrous wars with Sweden that had cost Denmark its trans-Øresund provinces under the Treaty of Roskilde just two years prior.
The .979 fineness places these among the purer gold issues of the period, consistent with the Royal Mint's adherence to the ducat standard shared across much of northern Europe for trade purposes.
