Struck to mark the 300th anniversary of Leipzig University's founding in 1409, this ducat was issued under Frederick Augustus I — better known outside Saxony as Augustus II of Poland, the man who traded his Lutheranism for a Polish crown in 1697. The university commission reflects a deliberate political act: a Catholic convert publicly celebrating a Protestant institution, shoring up domestic legitimacy while managing an increasingly fractious Saxon electorate.
The Kahnt census places this type among the scarcer Saxon commemorative ducats of the early 18th century. Few were struck for circulation.
