Franz Anton von Harrach ruled Salzburg as prince-archbishop from 1709 until his death in 1727, a tenure marked by ambitious Baroque building projects that strained the archbishopric's finances considerably. His family — one of the most powerful Bohemian noble houses — had placed him in the see partly through imperial influence, and his reign reflected that orientation toward Vienna rather than toward his own subjects.

Salzburg's ducats of this period were struck to the Venetian ducat standard, making them broadly acceptable in international trade well beyond the alpine territories the archbishopric actually controlled. The Fr#844 designation places this squarely within Friedrich's catalog of European gold, which gives some indication of how widely these circulated.
