Franz Georg von Schönborn ruled Trier as Archbishop-Elector from 1729 until his death in 1756, but he was simultaneously Prince-Bishop of Worms and Bishop of Prüm — an accumulation of ecclesiastical offices that was not unusual for the Schönborn family, who placed members across the Rhine church hierarchy throughout the early eighteenth century with remarkable consistency. The family's political reach at this period was arguably unmatched among the Imperial nobility.
Trier ducats of this reign are relatively scarce in the marketplace, the archbishopric being a modest issuing authority compared to the larger electoral mints. The long date range assigned to this type reflects the difficulty of attributing individual strikes to specific years within the series.
