Additional information

Ferdinand II's ducats for Catalonia were struck under his authority as Count of Barcelona — a title held separately from his Castilian kingship, requiring distinct coinage for the principality. The issue spans the years immediately following the 1492 expulsion of Jews and Muslims from Spain, a period of aggressive political consolidation that extended to currency: Ferdinand systematically harmonized Aragonese monetary standards with Venetian ducat weights to facilitate Mediterranean trade, particularly with Genoese and Venetian merchants financing his Italian campaigns.

The Barcelona mint's gold output for this type was never large. Survivorship reflects that scarcity honestly.
