Additional information

Ferdinand I struck ducats from Klagenfurt during his effort to consolidate Habsburg administration across the Austrian hereditary lands following the death of his brother-in-law Louis II at Mohács in 1526, which left him heir to both Bohemia and Hungary and stretched imperial finances to their limit. The Carinthian mint at Klagenfurt operated intermittently under Ferdinand, and issues from this facility are considerably scarcer than those from the principal Austrian mints at Vienna, Hall, or Graz.

Markl's attribution places this among a small group of documented ducats from the Klagenfurt facility for this reign. The .986 fineness conforms to the ducat standard codified at the 1524 Reichsmünzordnung.
