Additional information

Ferdinand I consolidated the Austrian hereditary lands under Habsburg rule following the death of his brother-in-law Louis II at Mohács in 1526, and the Klagenfurt mint operated under that reorganized authority. Carinthian ducats of this period were struck to the Venetian ducat standard that had governed European gold trade coinage since the late thirteenth century — a standard Ferdinand had no interest in abandoning, given how deeply that weight and fineness had penetrated merchant networks from the Adriatic to the Baltic.

Friberg 42 is notably rare in any grade. Klagenfurt's gold output in the 1550s was modest, and survivors in collectible condition are infrequently encountered at auction.
