Obverse description Within a beaded inner circle, an ornate shield bearing the rampant panther coat of arms of Styria is centrally displayed. The date 1537 appears above the shield in the field. The surrounding Latin legend reads +FERDI D G ROM VNG BOEM RX .1537., identifying Ferdinand I by his titles as King of the Romans, Hungary, and Bohemia. The overall design is characteristic of early sixteenth-century Habsburg hammered gold coinage, with the heraldic device rendered in a bold, relief style.
