The 1717 Reformation bicentennial was one of the most widely commemorated events in the German Protestant states, with dozens of princely mints striking medallic issues to mark the 200th anniversary of Luther's Ninety-Five Theses. Saxe-Meiningen's participation under Ernest Louis reflects the duchy's staunch Lutheran identity — a confessional allegiance that shaped its political alignments throughout the fractious decades following the Thirty Years' War.
KM#47 is among the smaller ducal contributions to this commemorative wave, produced in a territory whose mint output was never prolific.
