Eberhard Louis became Duke of Württemberg in 1693 at age nine, under the regency of his mother and then his uncle Friedrich Carl. These ducats, struck across a three-year window during that regency period, were issued as the duchy navigated the tail end of the Nine Years' War — French forces under Villars had ravaged Württemberg in 1693, burning Stuttgart's suburbs and extracting ruinous contributions. That a gold issue appeared at all in 1694 speaks more to diplomatic necessity and court prestige than to any recovered fiscal health.
