Frankfurt's 1796 contribution ducats were struck under direct pressure from Napoleon's Rhine campaign, with the city assessed a forced financial levy by French forces moving through the region. The "contribution" in the name is not ceremonial — it refers to the literal war indemnity Frankfurt was compelled to pay, with these ducats serving as the physical instrument of that transfer. Several German free cities struck similar emergency gold issues in this period for identical reasons.
The large clouds variety is distinguished by die, catalogued separately under JuF#964 from the small clouds type. Both varieties circulated simultaneously and the distinction went unrecognized by contemporaries.
