Obverse description The civic lion of Bologna rampant to left, holding a staff surmounted by a banner or flag in its forepaws, occupying the central field of the coin. The figure is rendered in the bold, stylised manner characteristic of late medieval Italian hammered gold coinage. The circular legend surrounds the lion along the coin's periphery, reading BONONIA DOCET (Bologna teaches), in Latin characters separated by stops.
