Christian V issued this ducat to commemorate the completion of Christiansborg Fortress on Elephanten Island in Copenhagen Harbor, a military construction project driven by Denmark's vulnerability following the catastrophic losses of the Second Northern War. The fortress was intended to command the harbor approaches and reassure a kingdom that had surrendered its Swedish provinces under the 1658 Treaty of Roskilde — arguably the most damaging peace settlement in Danish history.
Commemorative ducats of this type saw minimal circulation, which partly explains why survivors tend to appear in comparatively sharp condition for their age.
