Christian V ruled Denmark under the absolute monarchy formalized by the Lex Regia of 1665, the only such constitution in European history to be published and made law in written form. Ducats of this reign were struck primarily for diplomatic gifts, trade along Baltic routes, and payment of foreign mercenaries — domestic circulation was almost entirely a silver economy.
The 1696 issue falls late in his reign; Christian died the following year after a hunting accident at Clausholm.
