Christian Frederick Charles Alexander — the last Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach — was a notoriously indifferent ruler who spent lavishly on his court and ultimately sold the entire margraviate to Prussia in 1791, pocketing a pension and retiring to England with his mistress, Lady Craven. The 1769 ducat predates that ignominious end by over two decades, struck when the territory still functioned as an independent Hohenzollern cadet state. Gold ducats from Ansbach were produced in small quantities relative to the larger Hohenzollern mints, and surviving examples attributable to specific years within this reign are correspondingly scarce.
