Christian Albert spent much of his reign as duke without actual possession of his duchy — Denmark occupied Gottorp territory repeatedly throughout the latter half of the 17th century, and by 1689 he was effectively governing from exile in Hamburg. That this ducat was struck at all that year is a minor administrative achievement. He died the following year, 1694, never having recovered full control of his lands.
