Additional information

Christian Albert spent much of his reign in exile after backing the wrong side in the disputes between Denmark and the Holy Roman Empire, with Danish forces occupying Gottorp territory for extended periods. The 1689 ducat was struck in the brief window after the Peace of Fontainebleau partially restored his position, though he died the following year having never fully consolidated control over his own duchy.

Gottorp ducats of this period were struck at Glückstadt in very limited quantities, primarily for diplomatic gifts and court use rather than circulation.
