Additional information

Charles Theodor ruled the Electorate of the Palatinate from Mannheim, where his court had become one of the more genuinely distinguished in the German-speaking world — home to the Mannheim orchestra and a serious program of Enlightenment patronage. The 1767 ducat was struck at a moment when his treasury was under real pressure from the costs of maintaining that cultural apparatus while simultaneously navigating the fiscal aftermath of the Seven Years' War, which had ended just four years prior.

The Palatinate ducat series of this period is well-documented in Slg. Memme, which catalogues the finest known Rhenish gold of the 18th century.
