Charles Philip of the Palatinate-Neuburg line served as Imperial Vicar twice — in 1711 and again in 1740 — during the interregnum periods between Holy Roman Emperors. The 1740 vicariat followed the death of Charles VI, the last male Habsburg, triggering the War of the Austrian Succession. Vicarial coinage was a formal privilege of the Rhenish and Saxon circles, granting electoral princes the right to strike coins in their own name during the vacancy of the imperial throne.
Charles Philip died in December 1742, meaning this issue falls among the last coins struck under his authority.
