Charles III Joseph of Lorraine was appointed Bishop of Olomouc in 1695 at age eleven — a nakedly political move by the Habsburgs to keep the wealthy Moravian see firmly within their orbit. He never took holy orders and administered the bishopric entirely through deputies. The 1701 ducat was struck just as the War of the Spanish Succession was drawing Austrian attention and resources westward, making issues from this period comparatively sparse.
