Charles III of Hungary — Habsburg Emperor Charles VI — spent much of his reign consumed by the Pragmatic Sanction, the legal instrument he needed European powers to guarantee so his daughter Maria Theresa could inherit. Hungarian ducats of this period were minted at Kremnitz, the oldest continuously operating mint in Central Europe, whose output funded the diplomatic maneuvering that secured those guarantees. Charles died in October 1740, and within months his life's work was being challenged militarily by Frederick II of Prussia.
