Beschrijving keerzijde Central square cartouche bearing a five-line abbreviated Latin dedication legend, reading LEOPOL I IMP FI FERD CO DEC FEL PERPET, referencing Emperor Leopold I and affirming the feudal allegiance of the County of Desana. The cartouche is set within an elaborate ornamental border of Baroque scrolling foliage and strapwork that fills the entire coin field, with no exergue or additional devices. The composition is characteristic of hammered feudal gold ducats issued by minor Italian states during the mid-seventeenth century.

Aanvullende informatie

Desana was among the smallest feudal entities in the Po Valley, a county whose entire territory barely exceeded a single parish. The Tizzone family held it under Imperial investiture, which granted the right to strike coin — a privilege they exercised well beyond what their territory's economic weight could justify. Carlo Giuseppe Francesco ruled for 35 years, and gold ducats from his reign survive in small numbers, consistent with a mint operating intermittently rather than continuously.

Fr#254 places this squarely in the Friedberg gold series for Italian states, where Desana occupies a footnote few collectors reach until they've exhausted the major mints.
