Additional information

Reval — modern Tallinn — occupied a peculiar administrative position in the 1660s: a Swedish-controlled city that retained its medieval municipal coinage privileges long after most Baltic towns had surrendered them to Stockholm. These ducats were struck under that arrangement, with Carl XI still a minor during the early part of this date range; Sweden was governed by a regency council until 1672. The city's right to mint in gold was exercised sparingly, which accounts for the relative thinness of surviving examples across the referenced catalogs.

The "1st portrait" designation distinguishes this from later effigy dies introduced as the king aged into his majority.
