Aureus Magnus was a private Austrian gold minting firm active in the mid-twentieth century, producing trade and commemorative ducats outside any sovereign authority. The 1964 Tokyo Olympics — the first Games held in Asia — generated an unusually broad field of private and semi-official commemorative issues, as no centralized licensing body yet controlled Olympic imagery rights with the rigor applied in later decades.
The .980 fineness is a deliberate nod to the historic Venetian and Habsburg ducat standard, a commercial choice that distinguished Aureus Magnus pieces from sovereign bullion issues of the period.
