The "Aureus Magnus" ducats were privately issued fantasy pieces — not struck by the Bundesbank or any official German mint — produced in the late 1950s to capitalize on collector demand for gold material in a West Germany still adjusting to the Deutsche Mark framework. Heuss, serving as the Federal Republic's first Bundespräsident from 1949 to 1959, never authorized or endorsed these pieces. His term ended the same year this was struck.
