Additional information

This privately minted gold ducat was issued by Aureus Magnus to commemorate the 1960 Rome Olympics — not a state issue, but a medal-medallion hybrid produced for the collector trade during a period when West German private mints were actively filling demand for Olympic memorabilia that the federal government wasn't supplying. Aureus Magnus operated from Düsseldorf and issued a range of commemorative gold pieces through the late 1950s and 1960s, several tied to international sporting events.

The .980 fineness is characteristic of the firm's output, slightly below the traditional .986 ducat standard but close enough to market the pieces under that historic denomination name.
