| Obverse description | Left-facing bust of Pope Pius XII in papal vestments, depicted in high relief with fine detail to the ecclesiastical robes and collar. The circular legend reads PIUS XII PONTIFEX MAXIMUS, with the birth and death years 1876 and 1958 flanking the portrait at the lower left and lower right of the field respectively. The effigy occupies the majority of the obverse field, rendered in a neoclassical medallic style. |

| Additional information |
The "Aureus Magnus" issues were private gold strike produced by a West German firm in the late 1950s, intended for the Catholic souvenir and devotional trade rather than as legal tender. Pius XII died in October 1958, which almost certainly accelerated or motivated this particular piece's release as a commemorative item capitalizing on his death.
The X# prefix in the Krause reference system designates it as a non-circulating or fantasy issue — not recognized by the Federal Republic as official coinage in any capacity.
