The "Aureus Magnus" ducats were privately issued fantasy pieces produced in West Germany during the late 1950s and early 1960s, exploiting a legal grey area that permitted the manufacture of gold medals and coin-like objects not denominated in official currency. The "Children of Earth" series was among several themed sets marketed directly to collectors, with no monetary function and no issuing government authority behind them despite the "Germany, Federal Republic of" attribution that dealers applied for catalog convenience.
