This piece belongs to the "Aureus Magnus" fantasy series issued by Imperia in West Germany during the late 1960s, produced as bullion-adjacent collectibles rather than legal tender. The Apollo 8 theme was timely — the mission launched December 21, 1968, becoming the first crewed spacecraft to orbit the Moon. Imperia moved quickly to capitalize on the event, and several denominations were struck in the same series.
