Issued as part of West Germany's ongoing commemorative gold ducat program, this piece honors Albrecht Dürer on the 500th anniversary of his birth in Nuremberg in 1471. The ducat denomination itself is a deliberate anachronism — Dürer worked and died in the same city that had been one of the great ducat-striking centers of the Holy Roman Empire, and the format carries genuine historical resonance rather than mere nostalgia.
The "Aureus Magnus" designation distinguishes this from the smaller fractional issues in the same series. Struck by the Bayerisches Hauptmünzamt in Munich, which has produced commemorative ducats in this weight class continuously since the postwar revival of the format in the 1950s.
