Struck to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Augsburg Confession — the foundational Lutheran doctrinal statement presented to Holy Roman Emperor Charles V on June 25, 1530. The bicentennial fell during a period of renewed Lutheran-Catholic tension within the Empire, and Augsburg itself had a charged history with the document: the city's own Protestant community had been forcibly suppressed between 1629 and 1648 under the Edict of Restitution before regaining rights under the Peace of Westphalia. The commemorative issue was one of several struck across Protestant German states that year, each asserting confessional identity through coin.
