Aversbeschreibung Draped bust of Duke Anthony Ulrich facing right, wearing a long flowing wig with elaborate curls characteristic of the late Baroque period. The portrait is rendered in high relief with fine detail in the drapery and hair. The Latin legend encircles the effigy along the upper periphery, reading ANTONIVS VLRICVS D G DVX BR ET LVN, identifying the ruler as Duke of Brunswick and Lüneburg by the grace of God. A toothed border frames the coin's edge.

Reversbeschreibung The prancing wild horse (Wildpferd), the heraldic emblem of Brunswick, depicted leaping dynamically to the left with raised forelegs and flowing tail, set against a plain field. Above the horse, the word CONSTANTER arches along the upper legend, meaning 'steadfastly' or 'constantly'. Below the horse, a three-line inscription in the exergue reads EX AVRO HERCYNIAE INFERIORIS / MDCCX / HCH, indicating the coin was struck from Harz mountain gold in the year 1710 with the mintmaster initials HCH. A beaded border runs along the coin's periphery.

Zusätzliche Informationen

Anthony Ulrich ruled Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel for nearly six decades and was among the most culturally ambitious princes in the Holy Roman Empire — he wrote novels, patronized the arts, and converted to Catholicism in 1710, the same year this ducat was struck, a move that deeply unsettled the Protestant nobility of his own territory. "Ausbeute" issues like this one were struck directly from silver and gold extracted from the Harz mountain mines, a practice that tied the coin's very existence to a specific ore yield rather than general treasury production. The Harz mines at this period were in slow decline after their seventeenth-century peak.
