Andrew of Jerin served as Prince-Bishop of Breslau from 1585 until his death in 1596, and his ducats were struck under the rights of the Bohemian ecclesiastical princes to mint gold coinage — a privilege jealously maintained by Breslau's bishops throughout the sixteenth century despite repeated pressure from the Habsburgs to consolidate minting authority. The Bishopric had held Fürstenstatus, giving it the standing of a secular principality, which is precisely what made these issues legally possible.
Jerin was a Counter-Reformation hardliner whose tenure was defined by confrontation with Breslau's predominantly Protestant citizenry. The ducat's eleven-year span tracks almost exactly with his episcopate.
