Regensburg's ducat coinage of this period derives its political weight from the city's unique status as the permanent seat of the Reichstag — the Imperial Diet had met there continuously since 1663, making it the closest thing the Holy Roman Empire had to a functioning capital. The city's right to strike gold coinage was inseparable from that institutional prestige.
The .986 fineness standard held by Regensburg tracked the Reichsdukat convention closely, though the city's mint output remained modest against larger imperial mints.
