Bremen struck municipal gold ducats under its own authority as a Free Imperial City, a status it exploited aggressively during the seventeenth century to assert financial independence from both the Swedish-controlled duchy surrounding it and the broader disruptions of post-Westphalian north Germany. The 1667 date places this piece squarely in the decade after Bremen finally secured formal Imperial Free City recognition in 1646 — a legal victory that came only after armed conflict with Sweden.
The .986 fineness conforms to the ducat standard established by the Holy Roman Empire in 1559, which Bremen honored to maintain the coin's acceptability in international trade through the Weser corridor.
