Obverse description Three interlocking cartouche-shaped shields arranged in trefoil formation, displaying the arms of Nuremberg: the imperial eagle on the uppermost shield, flanked by two shields each bearing the Nuremberg city arms (a demi-eagle above a bend). The date 1649 is divided across the lower field. The circular legend reads MONETA AUREA REIPUB NORINBERG (Gold coin of the Republic of Nuremberg), with a small cross at the top separating the legend.
