Obverse description The obverse displays the heraldic castle of Hamburg — the city's traditional civic emblem — rendered in fine detail at centre field, comprising three towers rising from a two-tiered rusticated base, with the central tower slightly taller and all towers surmounted by spherical finials. The gateway arch and portcullis of the lower structure are clearly delineated. The engraver's initials H.S.K. (Hans Schierven Knoph) appear in Latin lettering along the lower rim beneath the castle, serving as the sole legend on this face.
