Waldeck's copper Dreier issues of the 1630s reflect the monetary chaos of the Thirty Years' War, during which dozens of petty German territories struck low-denomination copper coinage to fill a vacuum left by hoarded silver. This piece was issued jointly under three counts — Wolrad IV, Philip VII, and John II — a co-regency arrangement common in Waldeck, where the county was repeatedly partitioned and reunified among competing branches of the house. The joint inscription was administrative necessity, not ceremony.
