Philip Schenk of Schweinsberg served as Abbot of Fulda from 1541 until his death in 1550, presiding over the abbey during one of its most politically precarious stretches — the Schmalkaldic War of 1546–47 brought imperial armies directly through the region, and Fulda's allegiance was tested repeatedly. Small silver issues like this Dreier served the abbey's immediate economic needs during a period when its territorial sovereignty was under sustained pressure from both Protestant princes and the Emperor alike.
