A small floral or rosette crest surmounts the helmet at the top. Moritz of Saxony came into possession of the Electoral dignity not through inheritance but through a calculated betrayal — he sided with Emperor Charles V against the Schmalkaldic League, and when the League's forces were crushed at Mühlberg in 1547, the Ernestine branch lost both the Electorate and its lands to him. These Dreier were struck in the immediate aftermath of that transfer, when Moritz was consolidating new mint operations and asserting electoral authority over territories that had belonged to his cousins weeks earlier.
