John III of Henneberg served as Prince-Abbot of Fulda from 1537 until his death in 1541, a tenure marked by the intensifying pressure of Lutheran reform spreading through Hesse and Thuringia on all sides of the abbey's territory. Fulda remained a Catholic stronghold, but the financial strain of maintaining ecclesiastical independence during the Reformation forced the abbey to rationalize its small-denomination coinage. The Dreier — a three-pfennig piece — was the workhorse of local market transactions, and this issue belongs to the final two years of John's rule.
The reference cluster spanning MB, Saur, and both Gehrling-Erdmann varieties suggests at least two die marriages were employed across the 1540–1541 striking period.
