Henry the Younger of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel was one of the most tenacious Catholic princes to survive the Reformation era, holding his territory against Schmalkaldic League forces who actually occupied Wolfenbüttel from 1542 to 1547. The Dreier issues of his later reign came after his restoration — reinstated largely through the intervention of Charles V following the Schmalkaldic War. By 1555, the Religious Peace of Augsburg had just formalized the principle of cuius regio, eius religio, yet Henry remained one of the few northern German princes stubbornly maintaining the old faith.
Welter 430A is distinguished from the related 430 by minor die differences in the shield rendering.
