The partially preserved circumferential Latin legend reads ERNESTVS D G EPIS HILDES, identifying Ernest of Bavaria as Bishop of Hildesheim by the grace of God. The flan is irregularly shaped and clipped, a characteristic feature of hammered silver small denominations of this period. The overall strike is typical of provincial German mint production of the early 1600s. |
