Obverse description Central field depicts a standing episcopal figure, likely a saint or the bishop in pontifical vestments, rendered in low relief in the hammered style typical of early seventeenth-century German ecclesiastical coinage. A heraldic shield or ornamental device appears to the left of the figure. The partially preserved circumferential Latin legend reads ERNESTVS D G EPIS HILDES, identifying Ernest of Bavaria as Bishop of Hildesheim by the grace of God. The flan is irregularly shaped and clipped, a characteristic feature of hammered silver small denominations of this period. The overall strike is typical of provincial German mint production of the early 1600s.
