| Beschrijving voorzijde | Two adjacent heraldic shields side by side: at left, the Imperial eagle displayed; at right, the arms of the City of Nuremberg. The date is divided and placed above the shields, with the mint initial 'N' appearing below in the field. The design is characteristic of late 16th-century Nuremberg hammered coinage. |

Nuremberg's small billon coinage of the 1590s was produced under chronic pressure from the Imperial Circles to standardize denominational output across the fragmented currency landscape of the Holy Roman Empire — pressure the city's mint largely ignored in favor of its own well-established weight standards. The Dreier, worth three Pfennig, occupied the lowest practical tier of silver-bearing coinage and circulated heavily through the city's thriving craft and merchant economy.
The billon fineness here sits just above the threshold at which the Imperial Reichsmünzordnung of 1559 had attempted to set minimums for small change.
