Obverse description Bare-headed effigy of young King George I facing left, modeled in high relief with finely detailed hair swept back from the brow. The engraver's signature BARRE appears in small letters below the truncation, with the mint letter E to its left and the date 1868 in the exergue. The circular Greek legend reads ΓΕΩΡΓΙΟΣ Α ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥΣ ΤΩΝ ΕΛΛΗΝΩΝ (George I King of the Greeks), separated from the portrait by a plain inner border and an outer beaded rim. The portrait displays a classical academic style characteristic of Désiré-Albert Barre's work for the Paris Mint.
