Nakhshab — the ancient city known later as Nasaf and today as Qarshi in southern Uzbekistan — sat astride key routes connecting the Oxus basin to Sogdiana, and its local coinage reflects that intermediate position: heavily influenced by the Greco-Bactrian monetary tradition yet increasingly divergent from it as the Kushan empire consolidated control over the region. The "Ashtat" designation refers to a local dynastic or administrative title attested in this series, though its precise political relationship to Kushan overlordship remains debated among specialists.

Silver fractions of this type circulated alongside the dominant Kushan copper economy, suggesting a role in small-scale commercial exchange rather than tribute or official payment.
