Chaghaniyan, a small principality in the upper Oxus valley (modern southern Tajikistan), occupied a precarious position between Sasanian cultural dominance and the advancing Arab forces that swept through Transoxiana after 651. These anonymous imitations of Khusro I drachms were produced by local rulers who retained Sasanian monetary conventions long after the empire itself had collapsed — a practical choice in a region where merchants and tax collectors still expected coins in a recognizable Sasanian format. The reverse legend mark distinguishes this piece from the broader anonymous imitation pool and has been used by scholars to attribute production to specific Chaghaniyan minting episodes.
