Reverse description Tamil inscription in the field arranged in two or three horizontal registers, forming the local designation of the issuing authority. The characters are boldly incuse-struck, rendered in a square cartouche-like arrangement with a horizontal dividing line separating the upper and lower portions of the legend. The script is Tamil, reading the name of Pondicherry, consistent with the bilingual nature of French colonial coinage in South India. The flan is irregular and the strike uneven, characteristic of hammered coinage of this series.
