Reverse description A large ornate flory cross with lily terminals occupies the central field, its four arms embellished with elaborate foliate and fleur-de-lis motifs in the Renaissance style. In the lower left and lower right quarters of the cross appear two small heraldic shields: the papal arms on the left and the arms of Bologna on the right. The circular Latin legend BONONIA DOCET is distributed around the periphery within a beaded border, referencing Bologna's renowned university.
